Dungeons & Dragons 5.5e (2024)

Ülevaade

D&D 5.5E (officially the 2024 core rules revision) is the modernized, updated evolution of the immensely popular
Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (2014) https://groupfinder.eu/library/dungeons-dragons-5e-2014
https:///library/dungeons-dragons-5e-2014. The new and updated version of the system was released to coincide with the game’s 50th anniversary. Rather than replacing 5th Edition with a completely new "6th Edition," 5.5E refines and expands upon the existing 5E framework and most of the already existing mechanics. It is maintaining backwards compatibility with the  adventure and source books from 5th Edition.

Description

D&D 5.5E is the continuation of the iconic d20-based heroic fantasy roleplaying game. Players take on the roles of daring adventurers and the Dungeon Master (DM) describes the world, the events, controls the monsters and non-player characters, and referees the rules. The 5.5E revision was driven heavily by years of player feedback and data on how tables actually run the game. As a result, the new core rulebooks, the Player’s Handbook (September 2024), Dungeon Master’s Guide (November 2024), and Monster Manual (February 2025) are better organized, have clarified language and wording, and try to bring a stronger balance between spellcasting and martial classes. It plays exactly like the 5th Edition, but with tighter mechanics, fewer confusing edge-cases, and more tactical options for the players to have a more unique approach and feel to their characters.

System Overview & Key Features

Weapon Masteries This is a massive change to how martial classes are played in combat. Weapons now have specific "Mastery" properties, such as Cleave, Graze, or Push. This allows the characters to apply tactical, battlefield-controlling effects on their strikes rather than only rolling for standard damage on their turns.
Subclass Standardization All character classes now choose their defining subclass at Level 3. This standardizes character progression and prevents the narrative weirdness of a Level 1 character instantly unlocking ultimate magical bloodlines before they've even adventured.
Streamlined Conditions & Mechanics Historically clunky rules have been completely overhauled. For example:
Surprise Instead of enemies randomly losing their first turn, surprised combatants simply roll their Initiative with Disadvantage.
Exhaustion Replaced with a much simpler, cumulative 1-to-10 scale where each level of exhaustion simply subtracts from your d20 rolls and reduces your movement speed.
Hiding Normalized so that successfully hiding essentially grants the "Invisible" condition, removing ambiguity for the DM.
The Bastion System Introduced in the new Dungeon Master's Guide, this is an official customizable base-building system. It allows players to construct and manage their own strongholds. From arcane observatories to gambling dens.
Apex Monsters & Upgraded Threats The 2025 Monster Manual expanded the roster to over 500 creatures, redesigning legacy stat blocks to be more dynamic in combat. It also introduced "Apex Monsters". These are a higher Challenge Rating versions of classic monsters (like an Apex Hag) designed to serve as more challenging bosses or enemies adding more danger and flavor to the basic version of the creature.
Backwards Compatibility The core promise of 5.5E has been that you can still run older 5E adventure modules or campaign settings, even while adapting and using the newer ruleset and systems. If a table wants to bring a 2014 character class into a 5.5E game, the rules are there to accommodate, though it is highly encouraged to transition older characters to the updated 2024 mechanics, as the new systems bring  horizontal expansions to various classes and abilities.

Party Size: 4-6 (2 seat filled) Level range: 1-13 Played on: Foundry, Discord (voice), Startplaying (Payments/scheduling) Session time: 3-3:30 hours Weekly Sunday 9:00 AM (PST GMT-7) Cost: $7.50 Sessions 0/1 free This is not Phandelver and Below as written, this is a unique spin on the adventure adding elements of Helianas and A House Divided. The goal of this combination will be to give new players the opportunity to learn the game in a simple new player friendly semi-linear adventure(part1), while also allowing more experienced players to dive in and learn/experience the optional heliana harvesting, crafting, and cooking mechanics. Then, after you've got some experience under your belt and the party is more comfortable together, dive into a more complicated, in-depth, and non linear second adventure(part2.) That grants far more freedom. And then after that, returning to where it began and concluding the adventure with part 3. Why is this adventure on the cheaper end? Because although I have run lost mines, and a house divided before. This will be the first time running them as 1, as well as the shattered obelisk conclusion. The session cost is merely to cover the campaigns expenses. What to Expect from part 1: Journey from the city of Neverwinter through treacherous wilderness, explore mysterious caves, and delve into ancient ruins. Your choices will shape the fate of Phandalin as you encounter colourful characters, battle fearsome monsters, and perhaps even claim a lost mine of legendary proportions! What to expect from part 2: Your party of adventurers investigate an old manor house that has been abandoned for the last twenty years following the sudden and mysterious disappearance of its occupants. Within the grounds of the old estate, however, their exploration begins to take a turn. The party will quickly realize that something horrible happened in this place and the missing members of the family are not gone, nor have they forgotten their sins against each other. What to Expect from part 3: come face to face with what has been lurking behind the scenes since the beginning. Content Warning: This campaign contains some events or subject matter which may be uncomfortable for some players. it includes combat encounters which depict sequences of violence. Additionally, the adventure includes certain events which portray body horror, cannibalism, death, familial and emotional abuse, supernatural horror, human experimentation, murder, kidnapping, mind control, ghostly possession, torture, and large spiders. The first and third parts of this campaign will consist of an even mix of combat, roleplay, and puzzles while the second part will include tactical combat and unique encounters, The primary focus of this part will be roleplay. will respond accordingly To everything you do. Every decision will matter. You will be given access to a discord channel to talk amongst players, bounce ideas, and whatever else you wish to talk about with your party. Characters will begin at Level 1 and should be created using D&D Beyond with the 2024 ruleset. Once finalized, I will recreate your characters in Foundry VTT using their fully integrated modules before play begins to ensure no issues. Ability scores by default will be either point buy or standard array. If all players want a more heroic campaign, we can instead roll for stats together during session 0 using a custom array. All official D&D 5e content published by Wizards of the Coast (2024 Rules) is permitted. I am completely open to 3rd party, I own dozens of these books on DnD Beyond and Foundry, however any of these character options must be approved first. If you're a newer player I highly recommend you stick to official sources, but if you feel the official options aren’t your cup of tea, I will gladly work with you to find something else you may enjoy. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

Frau_Elster
Hi there! I'm Frau Elster, 33, located in Hanover, Germany.  I have been playing TTRPGs for roughly a year now. It became quite an hyperfixation and thanks to a local open club I've gotten the chance to test some systems and get an idea of what I enjoy in this game. Ideally, of course, the group vibes and gets along. That's a wish of mine but of course can't be forced. I tend to enjoy smaller groups up to 4, sometimes 5, on a bi-weekly schedule in the evening. I love creating complex characters with a few defining moments already having happened to them to help flesh them out. It didn't happen yet but I'd love to experience what it's like to have a ongoing campaign that weaves in the characters' backgrounds. Usually I have a concept in mind before I create a character and then read through _a lot_ of materials and sources to find the build and world-related backgrounds that fit. For example: I am in the midst of creating a tabaxi stardruid whose base idea was that she looks like a black jaguar and has the constellations map right there in the spots of her fur. Or I knew I wanted a gnome raised by ice giants who draws her magic from the aurora and can hit really hard and now I have several tabs open haha I enjoy good atmospheric horror and am actually thinking about hosting The Magnus Archive TTRPG. But that's a project for the future.  Coming from a theatre background I love roleplay and the chaotic rule of cool being applied more than dungeon crawling, rule crunching and min/max-ing. Social encounters and exploration are big to me. Do you know that one friend who needs to check every question mark in a video game? Yeah that's me (and is also a reason why I love Breath of the Wild. Exploring was very much rewarded in this game.) As a GM I love putting in puzzles but that is always a hit or miss with me as a player. In general I would say I am a bit of a chaotic player who enjoys discussing and brainstorming with the others.

Hey fellas, greeting to you all! The name is Shiirako and I am a seasoned dnd5e enthusiast (as player and dm) in my mid thirties. I enjoy great storytelling, rp and love just having adventures with other creative people, thinking outside of the box while gaming and just having fun as a team. Characterwise I am totaly versatile having played healers, casters and mele dds in the past. I try to be original in my thoughts of charactercreation and backstory, always trying to find a new and fun concept to try out. Also I am absolutely inexperienced in dnd5.5e but kinda curious. As a familydad and fulltime worker living in Germany, finding the right time to have a game will be the biggest issue, but you never know - maybe something will work out. :) Time windows for possible games would be for me inbetween 8 am to 4.30 pm CET. In any case, have a wonderfull day when you read this! Kind greetings, Shiirako

Covering the basics: How to start as a Dungeon Master

Covering the basics
“Covering the basics” is a easy-to-follow set of articles helping players get through the first steps of the game. You found a game to join? Well done, but now what? Do you have what it takes to be a DM (Dungeon Master)? Short answer: yes Long answer: You might’ve spent most of your games on the other side of the DM screen or watching people masterfully direct their games on Youtube. All this might seem like a daunting and difficult role to fill - all the rules, ruling, voices, worldbuilding and keeping track of everything that is going on. Feels a lot for one person to manage. But here is the honest truth - most DMs are mostly just “winging it” as they go. They might not know every rule in the book or have every alleyway and farmhouse carefully plotted with intricate details for the world their players roam around. You don’t have to be a master of the game to be a dungeon master. It’s just a title, it doesn’t mean they know what they are doing. The context effect You may have watched various expert Dungeon Masters on different streams or Youtube actual plays. And thought that this is the minimum skillset you should have to even dare to take up the role of a DM. But keep in mind, context matters. These shows do not represent your average players or DMs. These are professional productions featuring professional actors. Your players are not expecting a cinematic masterpiece with custom miniatures, terrain or orchestral soundtrack. They are your friends, either new or old. And they just want to hang out, eat snacks, tell stupid jokes and see what happens when they push too many buttons. Don’t compare yourself to others, whether they are your last DM, or someone on Youtube. Your style will be your own. And your mistakes will be part of your journey. You are there to react to their actions and tell them what happens next. That’s it. If your players end the game session feeling happy with how they spent their time, you’ve won as a DM. /images/general-media/1777376584_RRnkxK9n.gifIt is your game, as long as your players are enjoying it, you are winning Start small It is easy to fall into the pit trap of building your own epic world for the players to discover and enjoy. And while there is nothing inherently wrong with it, it would be better to start off small. You will reduce the amount of stress and headache you will endure by not preparing a 50-page lore document beforehand. Instead, consider running a oneshot. A self-contained short adventure, that starts and ends within one session. You will gather your bearings during the game, realize what parts of DMing you enjoy and what you would rather not focus too much on. Use a pre-written adventure. For D&D, you could look towards The Delian Tomb or A Most Potent Brew. These include maps, monsters and all the relevant knowledge you need to run your players a game. Or grab one of the starter sets (ex. Heroes of the Borderlands) and run that. Make sure that you understand the whole story beforehand, so you know where the story is supposed to go. If, however, you feel like creating something of your own, you can simply build a oneshot that follows some specific rules. Entrance: A puzzle or a simple monster fight to get the players involved. Cause: A situation to tie the players’ characters to the story. A clear call to action to guide the characters towards the end-goal of the adventure. Problem: With the goal set, present your adventurers with a situation that requires them to overcome it. Whether by brute force, thinking outside the box, or something completely different. Here’s a DMing secret: You can have your players face a situation that needs solving but as a DM, you do not have to know what the right solution to that needs to be. Let your players attempt different approaches and if they come up with something that seems reasonable, take that as the solution. Final encounter: Your oneshot should be leading towards a finale. Whether it is a boss fight, or a grand puzzle or situation that requires effort and teamwork - anything goes. It should be connected to the previous blocks to establish a cohesive narrative story. The ending (optional): Once the final encounter has been resolved, you can offer your adventurers a conclusion, perhaps it is a treasure hoard, public praise or something different. Since it is a oneshot, you don’t really have to worry about consequences, as the story ends there. Keep in mind, that oneshots should be reactive. Players should be forced to react to situations and not given too much time to wander around, chat with Boblin the Goblin at the tavern, or get bogged down with planning.   A good idea would be to have some pre-made NPCs in the background, so you can pull those up at moments notice. These characters should not have intricate backstories that aren’t vital to the story itself. They may have a simple motive or goal, that can support the story at hand, but isn’t a vital piece of information, should your players completely ignore or miss encountering them. You can use a name generator (like Fantasy Name Generators) to prepare a list of various names to make it seem, like you had those characters prepared and planned ahead of time. Pace over rules Nothing kills the vibe of the game than having to spend ten minutes looking for the correct ruling for a situation. As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to spend up to a minute looking up the rules - and if by then you don’t have the correct answer, make a ruling on the spot. Just be transparent about it and let them know that this ruling might be wrong and is temporary, in the future this might get ruled differently. But for now, to keep the story going, you should decide on the spot. If you have a more experienced player at the table, consult them. As a DM you are already managing way more than one single player should be (you are still a player, even though you are a DM). And offloading some of those responsibilities to someone else is the right thing to do. The DM does not have to be the most knowledgeable player at the table - they are the narrative engine, not the wikipedia. /images/general-media/1777376267_EGzmZM7I.webpDon't spend too much time pondering the orb finding the correct ruling, keep the game going A session zero It is highly recommended to have a quick session zero before starting your first game. Whether it is a brief oneshot or the start of a longer campaign - leveling with your group will help you avoid misunderstandings in the future. Recommended reading: Library: Session 0 checklist: How to build a DnD group that lasts Gather your tools Now prepare your adventure. You will most likely spend a lot more time than you should preparing for the first session. But being somewhat overprepared will help you in the long run. Once you start understanding how DMing works, you will get better at preparing for each session, eventually cutting down on the time spent on prep.   A DM trick worth remembering and learning, is called “moving castles”. You may have prepared a location or an encounter for your players to discover or run into. But through the magic of player agency they head in the complete opposite direction to your prepared piece of content (it happens). Instead of scrapping the work you have prepared, you can simply move it, so that the adventurers still run into it. A worn-down castle filled with a tribe of goblins, waiting to ambush anyone entering the front gate? Simply move it, perhaps adjust some elements to fit the new location. Instead of goblins, they are now human mercenaries or bandits. Instead of a castle, it is a small village. This isn’t to say, that you should focus on railroading the players (although for a oneshot it would be highly recommended, that you keep your players on the track you have prepared). But re-using prepared content in a new and appropriate way is the smart play. Other than that, all you need to get started, are your dice (or digital dice, if that is more convenient for you), and some paper, to write down notes, events and questions for you to look up between sessions. Remember, you are a player too. You should be having fun, although it will feel intimidating and stressful at first, it will get better. /images/general-media/1777376172_KgL1adMK.webp Take the leap You are stepping into a very rewarding experience of the game. Even if you are not planning on becoming a recurring DM, you will gain a better understanding of the game and the system. This will, in turn, make you a better player. Guaranteed. If you are ready to give DMing a shot, you can start off by creating a group on Groupfinder and find your players. Be sure to use the “Newbie friendly” tag to indicate the tone of the game. If you have a player in your group who has been interested in DMing, but has not had the courage to get started - “gently” send them this article, to nudge them to get started.
