After months of work, the Definitive Edition is now the main GATEWAY RPG rulebook. This is the complete game in a single volume: updated core rules, the solo play engine, a starter bestiary, and homebrew variants, all under one cover. What's new in this edition: The rules have been rebuilt from the ground up. Fixed damage by weapon size and the armor/shield system (previously optional errata) are now part of the standard game. Character creation is unified into a single Character Record sheet that works for both Standard and Advanced play. The old Advanced HP bloat is gone, replaced with a tighter progression. Solo players get the full oracle system and dedicated solo chapters, not an afterthought. The Starter Bestiary covers 25 adversaries across 11 settings, from high fantasy to cyberpunk to Lovecraftian horror, each with Standard and Advanced stat blocks. And the Homebrew Variants chapter collects every optional rule in one place, including legacy variants that restore the original light game for anyone who wants it. For returning players: If you're coming from an earlier version, Chapter 2 opens with a compatibility sidebar that walks through what changed and why. The short version: everything you liked is still here, it's just organized better. And if you want the original light game, the Classic Damage and Playing Without Armor & Shields variants in Chapter 7 take you right back. The legacy archive: Every prior version of the rulebook, spanning 2017 to 2026, is preserved in the Legacy Zip. Nothing's been lost, it's just no longer the current game. What's next: The Definitive Edition replaces all previous rulebooks going forward. New material, adventures, and supplements will all build on this foundation. 43 yr old male from Pittsburgh PA. I have been playing tabletop roleplaying games off and on since 2014. I started out in Rules Lite systems such as Risus and Dread before moving more into heavier games such as D&D3.5, 5e, 5.5. I have also dabbled a bit in other games such as Cyberpunk Red/2020, Call of Cthulhu, Star Wars AEG, etc. I do prefer to play games in more rules lite one shots or campaigns as I don't always have the time now to read a bunch of rulebooks or spend hours crafting a character. I am also a Solo Indie RPG designer of a game called GATEWAY RPG - https://gatewayrpg.itch.io/.  GATEWAY RPG is a free, rules-lite d20 framework engineered for speed, simplicity, and total creative freedom. OpenFray is a free, open-source combat console for Game Masters running Dungeons and Dragons 5e games. It is an initiative tracker that holds the whole encounter. It opens in a browser tab, needs nothing installed, and works without an account. Signing in is free, and it carries a Game Master's fights between devices. It keeps the parts of an encounter that are easiest to lose track of: initiative order, hit points, conditions and effects, concentration, and monster resources such as legendary actions, recharge abilities and spell slots. Effects have two ends, so OpenFray knows both who has advantage and who is granting it, and works that into the rolls. Every roll goes through one place and is logged with the dice behind it. A whole group can make one saving throw at once, with each creature's resistances and immunities already worked in. The table gets a screen of its own. A shared link lets the players follow the turn order and the game log on their phones, showing only what the Game Master chooses to give away. The built-in compendium ships the 2024 and 2014 rules, with opt-in libraries from Kobold Press and OpenFray's own books. Creatures and spells can be built by hand, pasted in as JSON, or taken from a D&D Beyond stat block with the free browser add-on. Compatible with Dungeons and Dragons 5.5e and 5e.
