The Unexpectables is a Dungeons & Dragons live stream hosted by the 101 club. It airs every Wednesday at 7 PM Pacific Time (Vancouver, Canada) on Twitch.  The campaign follows the travels and tribulations of Task the Kobold Ranger, Greckles the Kenku Rogue, Panic the Tiefling Bard, and Borky the Orc Barbarian, as they traverse the dangerous and mysterious lands of Alivast, and the Capital City that hosts a bungle of characters, magic and villains. In the world of tabletop gaming, there is one system that towers above all others. Whether you are a veteran of the hobby or just getting into it, you are aware of the elephant in the room. As the hobby evolves with new rulesets and indie titles, we dived deep into the numbers we are seeing on Groupfinder. You can see the live numbers here. The dominance of D&D It will come as no surprise to most of us, that Dungeons & Dragons remains as the dominant force in the hobby space. And while some of us (generally veterans who have played for a long period of time) feel like D&D has outlived itself and is losing to the newer titles. The numbers tell another story: Groups: ~60% of all the groups currently looking for players are for Dungeons and Dragons, either 5.5E, 5E or some previous edition. Players: If groups are over half, then the player side is even steeper. As 90% of all player posts on Groupfinder are looking for a D&D game. While many players are also open to playing other game systems, the vast majority still treats D&D as their go-to system. Looking to start your TTRPG hobby journey? It seems like you should find a dungeons and dragons group first. Beyond just D&D An encouraging trend we can see from our data, is the players' willingness to experiment and also try something else. While 90% of the players are looking to play D&D, they aren't only looking for a D&D group. When we exclude Dungeons & Dragons from the statistics, we can draw a clear "Top 5" of adjacent systems. It does not try to be a video game; instead, it provides a shared canvas where you can drop a map, throw down some tokens, and start rolling dice in under a minute. It is famous for requiring no player accounts—the GM simply creates a room and sends a link. While it has added advanced features like dynamic fog and extension support, it remains the most lightweight and mobile-friendly VTT on the market. System Overview & Key Features Zero-Friction Access Players do not need to register or sign in to join a game. By simply clicking a URL, they are instantly transported to the map with full access to their tokens. This makes it the undisputed king for one-shots, convention games, and introducing new players to the hobby. The Warp Core Engine The 2024/2026 "Warp Core" update introduced high-performance GPU rendering. This allows the browser to handle massive 144-megapixel maps and animated backgrounds with zero lag, even on older laptops or mobile devices. Modular Extension System Rather than bloating the base software with features, Owlbear uses "Plug-and-Play" extensions. You can toggle on a 5e Initiative Tracker, a Dice Roller, or a Clock tool only when you need them, keeping the interface clean and distraction-free. Pixel-Accurate Dynamic Fog The "Fog of War" tool allows GMs to hide sections of the map with incredible precision. You can use brushes to reveal specific corridors or use "Cut-out" shapes to simulate light sources, all of which syncs across every player's screen in real-time. Multi-Device Syncing Owlbear is built from the ground up for touchscreens. It is the only major VTT that feels natural on a tablet or phone, making it a popular choice for "hybrid" games where players use their devices at a physical table. Persistent Custom Rooms Paid tiers allow GMs to claim a unique, permanent URL (e.g., owlbear.rodeo/your-campaign). This room stays open 24/7, allowing players to check the map or move their tokens between sessions without the GM needing to be online.
