family/beginner-friendly D&D - alt-Sundays, free
ACROSS THE NORTHERN WOODS, SPRINGS ARE GOING BITTER AND STREAMS ARE TURNING TO RED SAND, AND ALL THE CREATURES THAT DRINK FROM THEM ARE FALLING SICK. ELVES AND DWARVES, PRIESTS AND ADVENTURERS, MANY CONCERNED NEIGHBORS ARE GATHERING AT AN OLD SHRINE TO FIND OUT WHO, OR WHAT, IS POISONING THE WATER. HEROES WITH GOOD HEARTS ARE NEEDED.
Maybe you played Dungeons & Dragons a while ago, or maybe you have always been curious, or maybe you're a parent with a kid who is interested and it sounds like a fun thing to do together, or some combination of those. I am an old-school D&D player since before the internet! And I am a dad of an unusual dwarf, sort-of.
We will meet (on a Roll20 voice call) every other Sunday @ 1:45pm CST/Chicago for 90 minutes, get (re)familiar with how to play Dungeons & Dragons on Roll20.net (it's actually easier now than it was 20, er 30, years ago, but I'm still learning the rule-changes...). We will use our Characters' names and NOT share or ask for personal info. AND IN THE 2-WEEK GAPS WE WILL TRY TO PLAY USING Roll20 MESSAGING (no pressure; we will see how that goes). Our campaign will begin with the first meeting, including you. Who are you and how is the problem of poisoned and dried up water sources causing you to get involved?
FYI, my being the Dungeon Master for a PG family game means taverns serve root beer, there's no focus on various gods/demons/devils, and we do our dice-rolling combat without graphic violent descriptions (and of course there's zero sexuality in this campaign) - these are some reasons the game got bad publicity, and nobody needs them. Goal is kid-adult appropriate enjoyment of one of the best games ever invented. We will move our tokens and roll virtual dice on the "virtual tabletop" while describing (or role-playing) what our characters do in turn. Two options: parent and kiddo play 2 separate characters (but each player needs a computer); or parent and kiddo start by controlling 1 character (parent helps kiddo, who makes the decisions - it's possible to start this way and the parent can later start their own character). Each player playing a character will need a free Roll20.net account, and while Discord is the best for voice calls, we can commit to using Roll20 voice if everyone is not on Discord. This game series will be absolutely free of charge, and everyone can use my Player's Handbook. Please be logged in and join the game before meeting time. Please request the link at least 1 day in advance, and feel free to make a 1st level character with "point buy" method for attributes. You get one extra point to add to any attribute, per my house rules. If you know how to advance to 2nd level, go ahead.
