Draw Steel (2025)

Ülevaade

Draw Steel is a tactical heroic fantasy tabletop roleplaying game designed by Matt Colville and the team at MCDM Productions. It is built to provide a modern, cinematic alternative to traditional d20 fantasy games. It focuses on high action, tactical depth, and ensuring that every player character feels like a legendary hero from the very first level. The system it is a spiritual successor to is
Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition https://groupfinder.eu/library/dungeons-dragons-4e-2008
Description In Draw Steel, players take on the roles of Heroes. Unlike other systems, the characters are heroes from the start. The characters are already capable of taking on the world and whatever threats may arise. The system encourages a highly tactical approach to combat encounters, promoting teamwork and clever use of abilities to control and affect any battlefield they might find themselves at. System Overview & Key Features
The 2d10 Core Mechanic The game abandons the d20 focus and instead offers two ten-sided dice (2d10) instead. This creates a better mathematical average and becomes more predictable and reliable.
No To Hit Rolls Draw Steel eliminates the traditional roll to hit. Instead, heroes automatically hit their targets with their primary abilities, but they roll to determine how much Power or impact the effect has. This keeps the game focused on making meaningful tactical choices rather than wasting turns on a miss.
Heroic Resources Each class manages a unique resource, such as Focus or Valor, which builds up during a fight. These resources are spent to activate powerful Signature Moves and Heroic Abilities, ensuring that combat has a rising sense of drama and escalation as the heroes grow more powerful the longer a battle lasts.
Tactical Movement and Forced Position Combat is designed for a grid. Many abilities do more than just deal damage; they allow players to slide, push, or pull enemies and allies across the battlefield. Positioning is vital, and the environment is intended to be a weapon that heroes can use to their advantage.
Tiered Success Action resolution often uses three tiers of success. A low roll might provide a success with a cost, a middle roll is a standard success, and a high roll is a spectacular success that might trigger bonus effects or additional damage. This ensures that every roll contributes something to the ongoing narrative.

I'm Jerry, the GM. I run a Sunday afternoon TTRPG group at my home in Las Cruces, New Mexico (Picacho Mountain area). We're preparing our next campaign and building the table now. System: Draw Steel RPG (by MCDM/Matt Colville) with OSR influences Campaign: The Charter of the Sapphire Writ. You play the Justiciars of the Sapphire Writ, a small order granted emergency authority by the Crown to stabilize collapsing borderlands. Restore the King's Peace, break bandit lords, protect the vulnerable. Heroic baseline: you do heroic deeds, you fight for people who can't fight for themselves, you leave places better than you found them. Tone: Tactical. Heroic. Cinematic. This is not grimdark and it's not a dungeon crawl. Think competent heroes making bold choices and winning hard-fought battles. When: Most Sundays, 11 AM - 4 PM Where: Dedicated game room, Las Cruces, NM (in-person only) Cost: Free Looking for: Adults with TTRPG experience who want heroic, action-forward play and can commit to a regular Sunday schedule. You don't need to know Draw Steel. LGBTQ+ friendly. Note: there is a cat allergy at the venue. We use a short application: https://www.lascrucestabletopgaming.com/sunday.html

Rando
How now and well met! My name is Rando, and I have been playing TTRPGs for a very, very, very, long time. Finding myself now with an almost completely open schedule, I am compelled to fill up all this free time playing in campaigns. TTRPG campaigns.  More and more campaigns...  ALL the campaigns!  Yes, yes -- I must play them... Ahem. Apologies...  I am looking for a campaign (or five) to feed my insatiable hunger  join a lively, well-rounded, and sane group of players who like to roleplay, share laughs, make memories, and tell stories collaboratively.  New campaign, ongoing campaign, homebrew campaign, published campaign; newly created spot or subbing in for a departee -- new character, fill-in character, NPC, former player's character: no matter. I will join your table with glee and vigor.    (note: vigor is extra) I enjoy all three pillars of TTRPGS (combat, roleplay, exploration) and appreciate when there is a healthy balance among them. I am partial to roleplaying, however, as I feel it is the one element you cannot find in other gaming formats. In the TTRPG Rock, Paper, Scissors game that takes place in the deep and cloistered recesses of my mind: ROC > RAI > RAW. I am open to learning and trying new systems.  I am a very easy-going and jocular sort, prone to tomfoolery betimes, but know full well when to wear the frowny mask versus the smiley one. A former teacher, I am very newbie friendly (to both players and GMs), and am gooder than most with the word use-ing for to tell things and show other things and for the explaining.   I write creatively ever and anon when the humour stirs. My favorite color is pizza.

VALSE
Hello! I'm Valse, an experienced D&D 5e GM and player looking to make new TTRPG friends online and play some D&D or D&D adjacent games like Draw Steel Daggerheart, or Pathfinder.  Campaign Preferences: I am a lover of deep roleplay and lore, tactical combat, and crafting entertaining and unique character backstories and builds. I enjoy combat, exploration, and roleplay all to similar degrees and tend to prefer games with a good mix of all three, if possible - my least favorite aspects of a game tend to be the book-keep-y, simulationist elements like tracking rations, encumbrance, or (and I'm sorry to say it for everyone who loves to browse) shopping episodes. As far as plots and settings I tend to prefer the grim, dark, tragic, and melancholic, but with the expectation that our party will be trying to overcome those aspects of the campaign rather than feed into them. In these settings, I prefer a group that's not so overly serious that we can't crack a joke now and then to lighten things up. While that's what I tend to prefer, I'm not at all exclusive of classic fantasy worlds, which I still quite enjoy, or even silly whimsical ones where we can improv some absurd shenanigans and no one in-world will bat an eye. Playstyle: As an active GM I really enjoy writing new characters and taking them in fresh directions, and as a player I like to start out that process by trying to fill out whatever seems needed in a group, be that mechanically or story-wise - a tank for a party of squishy casters, a wholesome dad character for the morally gray chaos goblins, a morally gray chaos goblin for a party of wallflowers; a victim of your Big Bad driven to pursue the main plot at all costs, a member of that fun new class, species, or faction you recently came up with, etc., etc. I find it extremely rewarding coming up with compelling, flawed, yet still mechanically effective characters with enough room for growth based on the parameters I've set up for myself trying to serve the group's fun. About Me: As a person I'm a fairly introverted and nerdy (of course) 29M, but pretending to be in a fantastical setting with some pals does really help bring me out of my shell. I also try not to take myself too seriously, and can get pretty silly to keep the vibes light; I'm actually known as "the quiet comedian" in some circles for the random one-liners I'll drop that have the gang bursting out in laughter. I've been writing little fantasy stories and imagining worlds and characters since I was a little kid and was drawn to video game RPGs to help scratch the itch, but I find there's no feeling like seeing those ideas come to life at the table where me and my friends are in total control of the fun. I'm LGBTQ+ friendly and neurodivergent friendly as a survivor of depression myself. I've got two precious kitties and a wonderful partner of almost 7 years who's been playing tabletop games alongside me pretty much the whole time - she's also interested in joining a game with me if things shake out on here, so ++ if you've got more than one spot open for an experienced, friendly player! :) Systems: I've got 6+ years experience GMing and playing 5e, with some increasing 5.5e / 2024 experience as our groups slowly transition to the new rules. I've played other systems here and there mainly through one-shots just to try things out, and am particularly interested in trying some more Draw Steel by MCDM. With any system I like to really dig into the rules and build up my knowledge to keep things moving smoothly at the table whenever there are questions - as a GM I share all my knowledge freely of course, but as a player I try to avoid sounding like a rules lawyer and just let the GM take the lead, only chiming in here and there just as a player advocate if it seems like a fellow player could use some help understanding or optimizing their classes, or if the GM needs help finding a quick ruling on an open question or something like that. Outside of 5e and 5.5e, though, I'm a total newbie at most systems, so a little patience from an experienced table would go a long way - or for a table of fellow newbies we can experience the joy of figuring it all out together! Favorite Media: Our imaginations and tastes might gel super well together if you enjoy any of the following media: Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Wheel of Time, Pokemon, Fullmetal Alchemist, Code Geass, Castlevania, Fire Emblem, Ghibli films, Persona, The Witcher, Kingdom Hearts, and similar.
